A Black Art Ecology of Portland (BAEP)

A Black Art Ecology of Portland (BAEP) is a multi-faceted, multi-discipline, multi-sited new initiative that brings together community organizations in coalition to devote resources to creating, reclaiming, and redefining spaces for Black art, youth, and audiences in Portland. Responding to this rupture in Portland’s Black community, the City of Portland’s Arts Affordability resolution, and most importantly, the Arts & Culture section of the Portland African American Leadership Forum’s (PAALF) “People’s Plan,” BAEP brings together community organizations prioritizing residents who have experienced, or are at risk of, forced displacement from places that have long been hubs of Black life. BAEP is supported by an Oregon Community Foundation Creative Heights grant, Miller Foundation, The Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery at Reed College, the Regional Arts & Culture Council, The Ford Family Foundation, Community Development Partners, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland Art Museum, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. PICA is the fiscal sponsor and a core partner of A Black Art Ecology of Portland through the SPACE Program. SPACE Program SPACE (Supporting Partners, Artists, and Community Events) offers PICA’s space, equipment, staff and other resources in support of local artists and community organizations to curate and produce residencies, programs, and events. SPACE is supported in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation, Pacific Power Foundation, and Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust.
