Atlas, who worked with the legendary and late choreographer Merce Cunningham from 1970, will present a special screening of excerpts from noted films created with and about the modern dance icon, as well as rarely-seen footage of the artist and his company. Excerpted material will include early super 8mm films, media-dance collaborations of the late 70s and early 80s, and recent documentation of the Cunningham repertory. Among the films and videos excerpted will be Joints (1971), Fractions (1978), Channels/Inserts (1981), Melange (2000), Views on Video (2005), and Interscape (2008). These films are at once radical in their compositional structure, intimate with Cunningham’s creative thinking, and fascinating in the look they offer at Cunningham’s work from the inside of the performance.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Mr. Atlas.
