Movements, Portland-based artist Ethan Rose’s latest sound installation, consists of over one hundred altered music boxes, carefully timed and methodically displayed across the gallery walls. The tinkering creates a sensation of a shifting texture, housed in a visually stimulating acoustic environment. Rose uniquely blends electronic devices with instruments of the past, including player pianos and carillons, creating sounds and compositions of new sonic possibility, rather than musical preservation. Antiquated acoustic instruments remain a consistent element to Rose’s work, with the 1924 Wurlitzer organ housed at the Oaks Park Roller Rink providing the music for his most recent album, Oaks, released in January. Movements was originally commissioned by and presented at Ambach & Rice (WA).
