Francis Alÿs is one of the most important young artists working in Mexico today. While known internationally for his collaborative works with sign painters, or rótulistas, and for his “performance walks,” he has simultaneously been making paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations and videos. Alÿs recently completed a major project for INSITE97 in San Diego and has exhibited at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the Humlebaek in Denmark and the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, he now lives and works in Mexico and New York and will be representing Mexico in the forthcoming São Paulo Biennial.

During his residency at PICA, Alÿs will create a commissioned performance walk for PICA, which will exist as an installation on PICA’s web site. He will also participate in the development of an exhibition of his visual work which will be held at the Pacific Northwest College of Art gallery from August 27 to October 4, 1998. Prior to his residency in Portland, Alÿs will partake in a parallel residency and exhibition with the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, B.C. PICA and the Contemporary Art Gallery will collaborate on the publication of a catalog that will document both projects and their corresponding exhibitions.
