For decades, the Balkan states have been an off-the-radar yet fertile ground for adventurous, underground performance. International curator Zvonimir Dobrovic, founder of Perforacije and Queer Zagreb Festivals in Croatia and Co-Director with André von Ah of Queer New York International, has selected an evening of site-speci?c performance art from some of Croatia’s and Serbia’s most inventive artists. Writer and multimedia artist Biljana Kosmogina leads a satirical political campaign for a new kind of political candidate, Petra Kova´ci´c performs in two works that reflect on the artist/object and artist/spectator relationships, and experimental duo East Rodeo creates a live, improvisational music and concert installation. It’s a rare opportunity to catch the work of Eastern Europe’s current generation of artists.
Produced annually in Croatia, the Perforacije (Perforations) Festival is the largest independent artistic initiative encompassing Central and Eastern European work in performance art, theater, and dance. The diverse offerings blur the borders among these genres and touch on issues of identity—public, political, religious, and national—in contemporary Balkan life. Outside of Zagreb, Perforacije has toured projects around the world, producing festivals and performance nights in New York; Bitola and Skopje, Macedonia; Belgrade, Serbia; and Brest, France.
