For our second year of TBA, we dreamed even bigger and bolder things, inviting more artists from around the world to present their visions on and off stage. John Jasperse Company explored CALIFORNIA as a symbol of freedom and promise; uncategorizable singer Diamanda Galás delivered two devastating and virtuosic performances; alt-classical chamber rock quartet Ethel performed their greatest hits; MK Guth ran her Red Shoe Delivery Service, whisking people around town with the click of their ruby heels; Headlong Dance Theater dove into the Hilton swimming pool; and Akira Kasai performed his absolutely riveting dance Pollen Revolution. At night, the activity at Machineworks grew larger, as the food visionaries behind Portland’s ripe hosted a series of Family Suppers before each evening’s performances.
